Compact - Working Together / Better Together

This website explores the Compact and the five Codes of Practice which underpin it.

Established in 1998, the Compact is an agreement between Government and the voluntary and community sector in England. It recognises shared values, principles and commitments and sets out guidelines for how both parties should work together.

Here, you can find out about the work of the key organisations associated with the Compact, read about current policy and research work and the latest news, download useful documents and guidance, and share examples of good practice taking place in Local Compacts in England.

ECM - Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the Children's Workforce

The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the Children's Workforce sets out the basic skills and knowledge needed by people (including volunteers) whose work brings them into regular contact with children, young people and families. It will enable multi-disciplinary teams to work together more effectively in the interests of the child.

The skills and knowledge are described under six main headings:

Over time we expect everyone working with children, young people and families will be able to demonstrate a basic level of competence in the six areas of the Common Core. In the future, the Common Core will form part of qualifications for working with children, young people and families and it will act as a foundation for training and development programmes run by employers and training organisations.

Every Child Matters (ECM ): Change for Children

Every Child Matters: Change for Children is a new approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.

The Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

This means that the organisations involved with providing services to children - from hospitals and schools, to police and voluntary groups - will be teaming up in new ways, sharing information and working together, to protect children and young people from harm and help them achieve what they want in life. Children and young people will have far more say about issues that affect them as individuals and collectively.

The new Ofsted brings together the wide experience of four inspectorates to make a greater difference for every child, and for all young people and adult learners, in England. Their educational, economic and social well-being will promote our success as a country.

Cerebra

Cerebra is a unique charity set up to help improve the lives of children with brain related conditions through researching, educating and directly supporting children and their carers.Brandon Balance

We recognise the child with a disability as a child first and foremost and try to work for them as children rather than for their disability. We want to improve their lives and help them be comfortable with their world, giving them the chances for experiences and enjoyment that all children should have.

We aim to spread understanding and tolerance of all neurological conditions, leading to a culture of inclusion. In which children can make a choice about their life's direction and participate fully in society.

Cerebra services add value to the child by taking a holistic approach. Fun, happiness and letting children (and their families) enjoy their childhood are very important to us.

Parents of disabled children can feel very alone and bewildered by all the services and information out there. Cerebra's Parent Support Department aim to help by offering information, support and various services that parents have told us would help them.

Examples of ways the charity helps are:
